The World Pasta Congress was celebrated in Philadelphia on 25th October, marking the 26th edition of World Pasta Day. The event was attended by pasta makers, politicians, scientists, journalists, and food influencers.
World Pasta Day began in 1998, when the first World Pasta Congress was held in Rome. This celebration wants to highlight and promote the versatility, health benefits and global love for pasta. It is sponsored by the International Pasta Organization (IPO), whose members are pasta producers from around the world.
During the past 25 years, pasta production has increased by almost 85%, from 9.1 to 17 million tonnes. In 52 countries (up from 30), people consume at least 1 kg of pasta per capita each year. Italy leads with an impressive 23.3 kg per person, while the U.S. averages about 8.8 kg.
This year, IPO members have committed to the “100 Billion Meals Challenge” a global initiative aimed at providing one billion pasta dishes to those in need over the next decade. The promoters believe pasta is the ideal food to combat hunger and malnutrition as it is tasty, healthy, nutritious, accessible, versatile, and sustainable.
1) What’s your favourite pasta dish? Describe how it’s made and why you like it.
2) Imagine you have to convince a friend that your favourite dish is the best food in the world.
