Victorian Giants: The Birth of Art Photography

A photographic exhibition on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London presents the society and culture of the Victorian era
leggi

Victorian Giants: The Birth of Art Photography is the first major exhibition to examine the relationship between four important artists of the Victorian era, pioneers of the art of photography: Julia Margaret Cameron, Lady Clementina Hawarden, Oscar Rejlander and Lewis Carroll.

Among the stars of the show - hosted by the National Portrait Gallery in London - is Alice Liddell, the very girl who inspired Lewis Carroll in the writing of his novels. The four artists dealt with the same themes and photographed the same people, often children and teenagers.

Photographs of Charles Darwin are also on display, immortalized by Julia Margaret Cameron in 1868 ten years after the publication of "The Origin of Species", the work that had made him famous.

The exhibition will be open to the public until the 20th of May.
