On 5 November 2024, the Republican Party’s nominee, Donald Trump, won the American presidential election, defeating the Democratic Party’s candidate, and incumbent vice president, Kamala Harris.
The inauguration ceremony was held on 20 January. That’s when Mr. Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. He’s returning to the White House after losing his re-election four years ago. He is the second president in U.S. history to serve non-consecutive terms.
Due to the freezing weather in Washington, D.C., the inauguration ceremony, which usually takes place outdoors, was held inside the U.S. Capitol Building. Also, the customary inaugural parade was replaced with an indoor celebration.
“The golden age of America begins right now,” declared Mr. Trump in his inaugural address, and he vowed to “totally reverse” the policies of his predecessor, President Joe Biden.
Later that day, he signed several executive orders that demonstrated his intentions, and that immediately sparked controversy. For example, he signed orders to dismantle federal diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. He also withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement, an international treaty aimed at combating the climate crisis.
Mr. Trump’s return to office is expected to have profound implications not only for the United States but also for the rest of the world.
