Darkest Hour (“L’ora più buia”) a 2017 film directed by the English director, Joe Wright. The film is set in 1940 and tells the story of the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, played by Gary Oldman.
After the invasion of Norway, the House of Commons calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. His successor, Winston Churchill, has to decide whether to negotiate a peace treaty with Germany or continue the war.
Oldman delivers the famous speech, "We shall fight on the beaches" in the film. The speech was delivered by Churchill on the 4th of June, 1940, the day after the operation that led to the rescue of 300,000 British and French soldiers trapped on the beach at Dunkirk.
We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.
The film is released in Italian cinemas on the 18th of January, 2018.
